In season 1 episode 9 of the classic spy comedy Get Smart, titled Satan Place, Max and 99 investigate a mysterious mansion on the outskirts of Washington, D.C. that is rumored to be haunted. The mansion, known as Satan Place, was once owned by a famous actor who died under suspicious circumstances years ago, and has been abandoned ever since.
Max and 99 infiltrate Satan Place by posing as a married couple looking to rent the property, and are quickly greeted by the caretaker, Mr. Zarkovich, who is played by horror legend Boris Karloff. Zarkovich gives the couple a tour of the mansion, which is filled with creepy decorations and odd artifacts, including a pair of handcuffs that Zarkovich claims were used by the actor to kill himself.
As Max and 99 settle into their new surroundings, they begin to experience strange occurrences that they can't explain, such as doors that lock on their own and mysterious footsteps in the hallway. They soon realize they are not alone in the mansion as they come across a few other individuals who seem to have secrets of their own.
Max and 99 soon figure out that Satan Place is not haunted, but is being used as a cover for a top-secret CONTROL operation. The operation is aimed at intercepting KAOS agents who are planning to steal classified information from a nearby government facility.
To complicate things further, Max and 99 are captured by the KAOS agents and locked in a room in the basement of Satan Place. However, they manage to escape and foil the KAOS agents' plan by transmitting a fake message to their superiors, which leads to the KAOS agents being apprehended.
As the dust settles, Max and 99 realize that the caretaker, Zarkovich, was actually a CONTROL agent in disguise, and that the entire operation was an elaborate ruse to get KAOS off-guard.
Satan Place is a classic episode of Get Smart that showcases the show's unique blend of comedy and spy action. The episode features several memorable moments, including a hilarious scene where Max tries to navigate a room filled with revolving bookcases, and an eerie sequence where Max and 99 are trapped in a room with no way out.
Overall, Satan Place is an excellent example of why Get Smart was such a beloved show in its time, and why it has remained popular with audiences long after its initial run.
