Maxwell Smart is an agent for CONTROL, a top-secret U.S. government agency tasked with thwarting the plans of KAOS, their international nemesis. In season 1, episode 21, titled "Dear Diary," Max and his partner Agent 99 are sent on a mission to stop KAOS from getting their hands on a diary that contains the names of all CONTROL's agents.
The episode begins with the Chief of CONTROL, played by Edward Platt, informing Max and 99 of the situation at hand. Their plan is put into motion, and Max- posing as Dr. Smith - is able to gain access to the hospital and the diary. However, complications arise when he also becomes a patient under his alter ego's care and reveals too much information.
As the episode unfolds, viewers are treated to several comedic moments as Max remains in his psychiatrist disguise and attempts to outwit the KAOS agents also after the diary. Meanwhile, 99 uses her artistic talents to distract and deceive the person keeping the diary. There is also a subplot in which Max's landlord, Mrs. Pennyworth, mistakenly believes he is seeing a psychiatrist and begins causing problems for him.
As with all episodes of Get Smart, "Dear Diary" features a healthy mix of action and comedy. Whether it's Max attempting to outsmart his enemies or navigating his own personal life, there's never a dull moment. The plot takes several unexpected twists and turns, keeping viewers on the edge of their seats.
