Maxwell Smart, an agent for the top-secret American intelligence agency CONTROL, is back in action in season one, episode 19 "Back to the Old Drawing Board." In this episode, Smart is tasked with investigating a new threat to national security: a highly advanced missile guidance system that could be used to destroy America's defenses. However, there's one problem: the creator of the system, Professor Helmut Schmelding, has disappeared, taking his valuable invention with him.
Smart and his trusty partner, Agent 99, are dispatched to Germany to track down Schmelding and recover the guidance system. However, they quickly discover that the system has been rigged to explode if anyone tries to tamper with it. With time running out, Smart and 99 must find a way to disable the bomb and bring Schmelding back to the United States.
Things take a turn for the worse when Smart and 99 sneak into Schmelding's laboratory and are caught by the evil KAOS agents who have taken over the building. The agents force Smart and 99 to disarm the bomb, threatening to kill them if they fail. Meanwhile, Schmelding has been brainwashed by KAOS to believe that he is a chicken, making it even more difficult for Smart and 99 to get the information they need to shut down the missile system.
As if the situation wasn't dire enough, Smart and 99 are also being monitored by a KAOS agent disguised as a cleaning lady. With danger lurking around every corner, Smart and 99 must rely on their wits and their training to outsmart the enemy and save the day.
