Ep 8. Alpines

  • September 30, 2021

In this episode of Gardeners' World, we are introduced to the world of alpine plants. Monty Don, the show's host, takes us on an adventure through the dry, rocky landscapes where these plants thrive. His first stop is a specialist nursery in the south of England, where he chats with nursery manager Rob Potterton about the variety of alpine species available.

Monty is particularly taken with the yellow flowered cushion plant, which catches his eye with its delicate petals and green foliage. Rob explains that the cushion plant is just one of the many alpines that have adapted to harsh, rocky environments by growing in tight clusters, often forming intricate patterns that are a delight to the eye.

We then move on to Cotswold garden, which is famous for its beautiful alpine beds. Head gardener Chris Beardshaw gives us a tour of the garden's many attractions, including a large pool filled with water-loving alpines. Chris explains how the garden's creators worked to incorporate native alpine plants into the space to create natural-looking, low maintenance displays.

Monty is also treated to a private tour of the garden's alpine house, which contains some of the more exotic alpine species that require more specialised care. He is drawn to an alpine plant with bright-orange, trumpet-shaped flowers that absolutely light up the greenhouse. Chris warns that this species has a tendency to be a bit fussy, but the staff at the garden have learned to keep it happy and healthy with careful watering and fertilisation.

Next, Monty visits a rocky outcropping in the Welsh mountainside that is known for its stunning displays of wild alpines. He is joined by a local conservationist who explains how the plants have adapted to this harsh environment by growing in deep crevices between the rocks, where they are sheltered from the worst of the weather. Monty marvels at the rugged beauty of the area and is thrilled to spot a rare species of alpine that is not often found outside of the Alps region of Europe.

Finally, we check in with a couple who grow alpines in their small suburban garden in the north of England. They explain how they have created a perfect mini-alpine garden in their small backyard using pots, stones, and gravel. Monty is impressed by the variety and colour of the plants in the couple's collection and praises their creativity and ingenuity.

Overall, this episode of Gardeners' World is a delightful exploration of the world of alpine plants, from the rare and exotic to the humble and hardy. Monty Don and his team highlight the beauty and diversity of these plants and offer advice on how to incorporate them into your own garden, no matter how large or small. Whether you're a seasoned gardener or just starting out, this episode is sure to inspire you on your journey towards a beautiful and bountiful garden.
