Game of Thrones season 7 episode 1, titled "Dragonstone," marks the return of the highly anticipated series. This season premieres with action and suspense that picks up right where the previous season ended. Dragonstone sets the stage for the epic battle of Westeros with glimpses of various character arcs and a blend of events that leave the audiences clamoring for more.

The episode begins in a sinister note, with a cold opening devoid of any dialogue. It features a grueling scene showing Walder Frey deep within his own castle, speaking to his family and supporters about how they massacred the Starks and recaptured their ancestral home, Winterfell. However, as the scene progresses, it becomes evident that things aren't what they seem. As Frey adjusts his words and actions, his skin seems to peel off, revealing the face of Arya Stark. With this chilling opening sequence, the audience immediately has an idea of the direction the show might take.

As the episode continues, we get to see how all the major players are faring since the climactic finale of the previous season. Jon Snow is seen giving orders to his bannermen to start gathering provisions for the coming winter, while also trying to deal with the new threat from the Night King. In addition, Cersei is preparing for the looming battles in the south while still trying to hold on to her power. Meanwhile, Daenerys Targaryen is seen returning to Dragonstone, her ancestral home, and starts planning her invasion of Westeros with the help of her counsellors.

The episode also features a number of scenes between Samwell Tarly and the Maesters in the Citadel. Sam has come to the Citadel to train as a Maester, so he can help Jon Snow with the looming threat from the North. However, he finds the task to be more tedious than he initially thought. In one scene, he is seen serving food while other Maesters dismiss his ideas and discoveries.

Another notable moment in the episode comes when Cersei seeks the help of a renowned craftsman in making new weapons to fight her enemies. She has decided to use the vast resources and knowledge of the Lannister army to her advantage, as she prepares to take on all challengers for the Iron Throne.

The last part of the episode focuses on Daenerys' return to Dragonstone and her subsequent council with her advisers, such as Tyrion, Varys, and Grey Worm. She orders her armies to be prepared as they are about to wage war across Westeros. As she surveys the castle and makes herself comfortable in the familiar surroundings, the episode ends on a cliffhanger, with Daenerys telling Tyrion that it is now time to "begin."

Overall, Game of Thrones season 7 episode 1 "Dragonstone" is an excellent start to the new season. It delivers on the expectations of fans and keeps the focus on the evolving narrative, while still giving some insight into the character's personalities and motivations. The episode marks the beginning of the final stages of the battle for the Iron Throne and sets the stage for the coming war. Fans are sure to be entertained by the gripping sequences and unexpected twists that keep the spirit of the show alive and well.
