In "Game of Thrones" season 5 episode 1, titled "The Wars To Come," we are thrust back into the mythical world of Westeros and the game of thrones that never ends. This episode picks up where season 4 left off, with characters of the Seven Kingdoms in a state of unrest as leaders face new challenges.
The opening scene features a young Cersei Lannister in a flashback. She visits a fortune teller who reads her future and foretells the death of Cersei's children. This vision of the future haunts Cersei throughout the episode and leads her to make rash decisions.
The episode then shifts to the present time, where the aftermath of the events in King's Landing are still being felt. Cersei is still mourning the loss of her father, Tywin Lannister, who was killed in a trial by combat at the end of season 4. Meanwhile, her brother, Jaime Lannister, is struggling to deal with the events that led to Tywin's death and his new position as the head of the Lannister family.
We also get a glimpse into the action in the North, where Jon Snow and Stannis Baratheon are dealing with the aftermath of the Battle of Castle Black. Stannis is eager to press his claim to the Iron Throne and is trying to recruit Jon to his cause. Jon, however, is torn between his loyalty to the Night's Watch and his desire to help his fellow Northerners.
Back in King's Landing, we see the repercussions of Cersei's rash decisions as she tries to maintain her power in a world where everyone is vying for the Iron Throne. She clashes with the new High Sparrow, played by Jonathan Pryce, who is the leader of a religious movement that is gaining power in the city.
The most exciting subplot in the episode, however, involves Daenerys Targaryen, who is still struggling to maintain her hold on the city of Meereen. She is dealing with internal strife from the Sons of the Harpy, a revolutionary group that is fighting her rule. On top of that, she is facing the loss of two of her dragons, which were last seen flying free in the season 4 finale.
Overall, "The Wars To Come" sets the tone for what promises to be an action-packed season. The episode is full of political intrigue and sets up the various storylines that will dominate the season to come. It's a great start to what is sure to be another epic season of "Game of Thrones."
