In this episode of Game of Thrones, entitled “The Mountain and the Viper,” tensions rise as two of the show’s most fearsome characters prepare for battle. Oberyn Martell, known as the Red Viper, seeks justice for the murder of his sister and her children during Robert’s Rebellion, and believes the Lannister’s employ a monstrous knight, Ser Gregor Clegane, otherwise known as “The Mountain,” responsible for the deeds.
The episode opens with both camps preparing for the fight, with The Mountain standing behind his sigil banner as Oberyn discusses tactics with his lover and confidante, Ellaria Sand. The two fighters square off in front of a packed crowd of spectators in King’s Landing’s royal arena. Although both are known for their ruthlessness and skill, it quickly becomes apparent that Oberyn is taking the upper hand, using his speed and agility to dodge The Mountain’s slow heavy blows. Voice raised in anger, Oberyn repeatedly accuses The Mountain of killing his sister, angering the larger man and causing him to make mistakes in the fight.
The High Sparrow, a new character introduced this season, arrives at King’s Landing and begins to assert his power over the city, most visibly against the prostitutes. As he gains traction in his attempts to restore piety and morality to the population, he gains further support from many of the city’s commoners, setting the stage for future conflicts with the royal family and further complicating the politics of the capital.
Elsewhere, Theon Greyjoy continues his journey of self-discovery and redemption, with his former torturer Ramsay nominally taking on the role of the mentor that he so cruelly lacked in his youth. Ramsay discusses strategy with Theon in a tentative and almost friendly way, but is quick to turn violent if Theon makes a mistake. The scars of his torture and manipulation by Ramsay are evident in Theon’s haunted expression, but he is slowly regaining his sense of self and purpose as he helps Ramsay carry out his schemes.
Finally, in the North, the Night’s Watch deal with the growing threat of the Wildlings, led by Mance Rayder the King Beyond the Wall. As they prepare for impending danger, Jon Snow finds himself pulled between his loyalties to his Night’s Watch oath and his love for the Wildling woman, Ygritte. With tensions high on both sides of the wall, it remains to be seen whether Jon can bridge the divide and broker a peace between two populations that have long been enemies.
Overall, “The Mountain and the Viper” is another tense and dramatic episode, filled with political intrigue, moral dilemmas, and explosive violence. With unforgettable scenes of combat and character development, it is sure to be a fan-favorite among lovers of the epic fantasy genre.
