In the season four premiere of Game of Thrones, titled "Two Swords," the fallout from the events of the Red Wedding continue to reverberate throughout Westeros. The episode begins with Tywin Lannister supervising the reforging of Ned Stark's sword, Ice, into two new blades - one of which he gives to his son Jaime, who has returned to King's Landing after being held captive by the Starks for over a year.
Meanwhile, in the Riverlands, Arya Stark and Sandor Clegane continue their journey, with Arya seeking revenge on those who wronged her family. They come across a group of Frey soldiers who boast of their involvement in the Red Wedding, and Arya is forced to witness yet another devastating loss.
In King's Landing, Tywin reveals a plan to Oberyn Martell, the Prince of Dorne, who has arrived for the royal wedding. Tywin hopes to forge an alliance with the Martells, and offers them a position on the small council in exchange for their support.
Elsewhere in the city, Tyrion Lannister is recovering from injuries sustained during the Battle of Blackwater, with his lover Shae by his side. However, their happiness is short-lived, as Tywin informs Tyrion that he must marry Sansa Stark in order to solidify their hold on the North. Tyrion is understandably resistant to the idea, but ultimately agrees in order to protect Shae, who he fears will be punished if he does not comply.
Beyond the Wall, Bran Stark and his companions continue their search for the three-eyed raven. They come across a deserted village, where they are attacked by wights and saved by a mysterious figure wielding a flaming sword - the same figure Bran has been dreaming about.
Finally, in the Vale, Sansa's aunt Lysa Arryn, who has welcomed the Stark girl into her home, becomes increasingly unstable and paranoid. She accuses Sansa of stealing the affection of her new husband, Petyr Baelish, and threatens her with violence.
Overall, "Two Swords" sets the stage for the rest of the season, introducing new characters and conflicts, while continuing to develop the ongoing storylines from the previous seasons. The episode is filled with tense and emotional moments, and sets up a number of intriguing plot threads that will undoubtedly pay off in the episodes to come.
