Lord Eddard "Ned" Stark has been imprisoned in the Black Cells for treason by King Joffrey Baratheon. On the eve of his execution, his daughters Sansa and Arya have been desperately trying to obtain his pardon or rescue him, but to no avail. Sansa is powerless and tormented by Queen Cersei Lannister, while Arya is disguised as a boy and travelling to the Wall with her friend Gendry and her father's old friend, Yoren.
At the Wall, Jon Snow and his fellow recruits are about to take their oaths as members of the Night's Watch. However, news of Ned's arrest and impending execution reaches them, and Jon is torn between his duty to the Watch and his love for his family. Meanwhile, Tyrion Lannister is using his wits and charm to win the hearts of the hill tribesmen who have captured him on his journey back to King's Landing.
As Ned is brought before the gathered crowd in King's Landing, he refuses to confess to treason and instead proclaims Joffrey's illegitimacy. This defiance seals his fate, and he is sentenced to death by beheading. Sansa and Arya are both present in the crowd, but are unable to do anything to save their father. In the aftermath of Ned's execution, the realm is plunged into chaos as Joffrey consolidates his power and his enemies begin to plot their revenge.
