Edward and Alphonse arrive in the ancient city of Xerxes, where they continue their search for the Philosopher's Stone. They discover a hidden chamber beneath the city and encounter a strange being known as the Homunculus in the Flask. The Homunculus offers to become their ally and reveal the secrets of the Philosopher's Stone in exchange for his freedom. The Elric brothers are hesitant, but the Homunculus insists that they have much to gain by working with him.
Meanwhile, back in Central City, Roy Mustang is still recovering from his injuries and is visited by Riza Hawkeye. Mustang is determined to uncover the conspiracy surrounding the Homunculus and the military, but he needs Hawkeye's help to do so. She agrees to assist him and they begin to investigate the origins of the Homunculus.
Elsewhere, Scar and his companions encounter Kimblee, the ruthless alchemist responsible for the Ishvalan massacre. They engage in a fierce battle, but Scar is ultimately defeated and captured by Kimblee's soldiers. Kimblee reveals that he has been tasked with taking Scar to Central City, where he will be put on trial for his crimes.
As the episode progresses, the true nature of the Homunculus is revealed. He tells the Elric brothers his origin story, which involves an alchemist named Van Hohenheim and an ancient civilization that once existed in Xerxes. The Homunculus claims to have been born from the blood of the powerful alchemist and has been trapped in the flask for hundreds of years.
As they learn more about the Homunculus, the Elric brothers begin to question his motivations and whether or not they can trust him. Edward in particular is torn between his desire for knowledge and his suspicions about the Homunculus' true nature. The Homunculus continues to manipulate the brothers, leading them deeper into the secrets of the Philosopher's Stone.
As the episode comes to a close, the Homunculus' plan begins to unfold. He reveals that he intends to use the Philosopher's Stone to gain a human body and become the ultimate form of life. The Elric brothers are shocked by his ambition and must decide whether or not to continue working with him. Meanwhile, Mustang and Hawkeye make a breakthrough in their investigation and realize that the Homunculus is not what he seems.
