In Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood season 1 episode 3, entitled "City of Heresy," Edward and Alphonse Elric continue their journey to discover the Philosopher's Stone, which they believe will help them regain their lost bodily functions. The brothers soon arrive in the town of Lior, where they discover that the town's residents have abandoned worship of the state-sanctioned deity and instead are devoted to a new deity named Leto.
The brothers encounter a young girl named Rose who explains that Leto has given her hope and salvation after the death of her parents. She tells Edward and Alphonse that they are heretics and will be punished by the state for their beliefs. Despite her warning, the brothers continue to investigate the situation.
As they explore the town, the brothers encounter a group of armed men who are rounding up heretics and taking them to a church for judgment. The Elric brothers attempt to intervene and stop the violence, but are quickly overwhelmed by the soldiers. They are saved by a mysterious man named Father Cornello who claims to be the chosen prophet of Leto and offers to help the brothers in their quest for the Philosopher's Stone.
Edward becomes suspicious of Father Cornello and believes that he may be using alchemy to deceive the people of Lior. He investigates the church and discovers that it is lined with transmutation circles, a powerful form of alchemy. Edward confronts Father Cornello, who reveals that he has been using the people's faith in Leto to control them and manipulate them into believing in his false promises of salvation.
Edward challenges Father Cornello to a battle and the two engage in an intense alchemical showdown. Despite Father Cornello's powerful abilities, Edward is able to outsmart him and defeat him. With Father Cornello's defeat, the transmutation circles in the church are destroyed and the people of Lior are freed from his control.
As the episode concludes, the brothers quickly depart from Lior and continue on their journey to find the Philosopher's Stone. Edward reflects on the dangers of blindly following faith and the importance of questioning authority. The episode ends on a cliffhanger, leaving viewers eagerly anticipating the rest of the season.
