Tohru Honda, the main character of Fruits Basket season 1 episode 3, wakes up early in the morning to make breakfast for her hosts, Shigure and Yuki. She decides to make onigiri, a traditional Japanese rice ball, but struggles with shaping it correctly. Tohru's clumsiness causes her to be behind schedule and she ends up being late for school. On her run to school, she bumps into a boy who notices her small and thin body type. Embarrassed, Tohru runs away without saying anything.
At school, Tohru discovers that she is in the same class as Yuki and the boy who commented on her body at the start of the episode, Kyo. When the class is asked to introduce themselves, Tohru stumbles over her words and tries to hide her face from the other students. Kyo, who is known for being hot-headed and impulsive, teases Tohru for her shyness and lack of confidence.
As the day goes on, Tohru begins to feel self-conscious about her body shape due to Kyo's comments and the boy's earlier remarks. She tries to hide her body under her school uniform and becomes quiet and withdrawn in class. Yuki notices that something is wrong with Tohru and tries to talk to her, but she is too embarrassed to discuss her insecurities. Later, Tohru overhears Kyo and Yuki talking and thinks that they are making fun of her.
After school, Tohru goes for a walk to clear her mind. She comes across a group of children playing and is reminded of her own childhood. She used to play with her mother in a nearby park, but after her mother's death, she became distant from other children. Tohru remembers her mother's words about how everyone is unique and special in their own way.
Eventually, Tohru comes across a large abandoned building and decides to explore it. Inside, she discovers a room with a strange symbol on the floor and a radio playing music. Suddenly, she is confronted by a large rat named Momiji who reveals that he is also a member of the Zodiac. Momiji asks Tohru if she wants to know more about the curse and the Zodiac members.
Tohru is hesitant at first, but Momiji's cheerful personality and friendly demeanor put her at ease. Momiji reveals that the curse affects each of the Zodiac in different ways and that they all struggle with their own insecurities and problems. He encourages Tohru to embrace her own uniqueness and to not worry about what others think of her body.
The episode ends with Tohru returning home and Shigure and Yuki noticing her improved mood. Yuki tells Tohru that Kyo can be difficult sometimes, but he doesn't mean any harm. Tohru realizes that everyone has their own strengths and weaknesses and begins to feel more confident in herself.
Overall, Fruits Basket season 1 episode 3 explores themes of self-confidence, body image, and acceptance. Through Tohru's journey, the episode shows how important it is to embrace one's own uniqueness and to not let others define us. The introduction of Momiji and his insights into the curse and the Zodiac members adds to the overall mystery of the series and sets the stage for future episodes.
