In the fifth episode of season four of Fringe, titled "Novation," the team continues to investigate the threats posed by the shapeshifters, now that Olivia has returned from the alternate universe. However, things take a turn when Walter decides to try and transfer the memories of Peter from his own brain to that of the blank slate Universe-1 Peter, who is still adjusting to this new reality.
As they explore this possibility, a new threat begins to emerge in the form of two shapeshifters who have taken on the identities of a married couple, who are eventually revealed to be scientists involved in the development of a new type of organic material that could have devastating consequences if it falls into the wrong hands. The team must race against the clock to stop the shapeshifters before it's too late.
Meanwhile, Peter continues to struggle with his place in this new universe, as he grapples with the reality that he is not the same Peter as the one who once existed in Universe-1. He fears that he will never truly fit in and begins to question whether there is any hope for him to find a sense of belonging in this strange new world.
As the episode progresses, we see a lot of character development for Peter, as he begins to take on a more active role in the team's investigations. He is determined to prove that he can be trusted and that he is just as capable as his alternate self.
The episode also explores some of the ongoing tensions between Olivia and Peter, as they struggle to deal with the fact that they have been separated for so long and are now essentially strangers to one another. There are moments of tenderness between them, but also moments of awkwardness and discomfort as they try to navigate their new relationship.
Overall, "Novation" is an exciting and suspenseful episode that moves the overarching plot of the season forward while also delving deeper into the personal struggles of the characters. It's an excellent installment in a series that consistently delivers complex and engaging storytelling.
