In Fringe season 2 episode 8 titled "August," the FBI's Fringe Division is called to investigate a series of strange deaths in New York City. The victims have all been ordinary people with no known connection to one another, but they all share the same memory of a man with no face. Meanwhile, Agent Olivia Dunham (Anna Torv) is struggling with her own memories of her past, which continue to haunt her and affect her ability to do her job.
As the investigation unfolds, the Fringe team discovers that the man with no face may not be a man at all, but rather a mysterious figure known as "The Observer." The Observer seems to have the ability to move through time and space, observing pivotal moments in history. He also seems to have taken an interest in one of the victims, a woman named Christine Hollis (played by actor Jenni Blong), who has a rare genetic disorder that makes her immune to all known diseases.
The team's investigation leads them to a hidden lab where they discover that a group of scientists has been experimenting on Christine in order to unlock the secrets of her immunity. But when they try to apprehend the scientists, they find themselves under attack by a group of men in black suits who seem to be protecting the lab.
As the team tries to escape, they are confronted by The Observer, who warns them that they are interfering with events that should not be altered. Agent Dunham is particularly affected by The Observer, as she seems to recognize him from her childhood memories.
The team manages to escape, but not before one of them is gravely injured. Back at the lab, Walter Bishop (John Noble) realizes that the scientists were working on a cure for a deadly virus that The Observer has predicted will wipe out most of humanity. He also realizes that Christine's immunity may be the key to creating a vaccine for the virus.
In the episode's climactic scene, The Observer approaches Agent Dunham and reveals that he has been watching her for a long time. He explains that he is part of a group of observers who travel through time to witness pivotal moments in history, and that they have chosen her as their "guardian." He also warns her that "the day is coming" when she will have to make a choice that will determine the fate of humanity.
"August" is a standout episode of Fringe, showcasing the show's unique blend of science fiction, mystery, and character development. It also introduces one of the series' most memorable characters in The Observer, who will go on to play a significant role in the show's mythology. The episode has a haunting quality to it, fueled by Anna Torv's performance as Agent Dunham, who is coming to grips with her own past and struggling to understand the implications of her connection to The Observer. Overall, "August" is a must-see episode for fans of Fringe and anyone who loves thought-provoking science fiction.
