The One That Could Have Been (1) is the fifteenth episode in season six of the hit show Friends. This episode takes a different approach than the typical episode, as it explores what could have been for each of the characters if they had made different choices in their lives.
After Joey takes a job as a tour guide at the newly opened Museum of Natural History, he leads the gang on a tour and they stumble upon an exhibit that transports them to an alternate reality. The friends find themselves in a world where their lives have taken drastically different paths. For example, Chandler is now a struggling writer and Joey is a wealthy businessman.
Throughout the episode, we see each character explore their new lives and contemplate what they may have missed out on if they had made different choices. Rachel, now a successful executive, wonders if she would have still met Ross if she had stayed with her ex-fiancé Barry. Ross, now a successful musician, realizes that he never would have pursued a career in music if he had not broken up with Rachel in the past. Monica, now an overweight chef, struggles with her self-confidence but still finds happiness with Chandler.
The episode successfully shows the audience how important each decision we make in life can be, and how it can shape our entire future. It also gives a unique insight into what each character values the most in their lives, and it is interesting to see what they would have changed if given the chance.
The One That Could Have Been (1) is a standout episode in the series, as it departs from the typical format and gives viewers a chance to see their favorite characters in a new light. It is a great exploration of what could have been and serves as a reminder that the choices we make can have a huge impact on our lives.
