Monica and Ross are excited to perform their famous high school dance routine at a New Year’s Eve party held at the museum where Monica works. The siblings spend the day practicing their routine, much to the annoyance of Chandler and Joey who are their unsuccessful cheerleaders. Meanwhile, Rachel worries about her job insecurity at Ralph Lauren, after her boss enlists her to work on a fashion project with a colleague who is known for stealing ideas. Rachel tries to protect her work, but her colleague undermines her at every turn.

As the night wears on, Joey and Chandler try to impress the women at the party by performing their own dance routine, which falls a little flat. Monica and Ross’ routine, however, is a huge hit, and they get to dance on stage using the museum’s artifacts as props. But things turn sour when Ross accidentally kicks a fellow dancer in the face and Monica falls on the stage, causing the backdrop to fall on them.

Meanwhile, Phoebe and her boyfriend Mike spend their New Year’s Eve volunteering to be “clock holders” in Times Square. Things take a strange turn when they are shown to their podium, which is located behind Regis Philbin and his producer. The couple bickers with each other, leaving Mike to lose his temper and yell insults at the television host.

As midnight approaches, the group rushes back to Monica’s apartment to watch the ball drop. Rachel, who has been having a terrible night, finally receives some good news: her boss compliments her work and offers her a permanent position, which she joyfully accepts. In the end, the group reflects on their past year and sings “Auld Lang Syne,” dreaming of what’s to come in the new year.

“The One With The Routine” is an energetic and fun episode that features some of the show’s most memorable moments. Monica and Ross’ dance routine is a highlight, showcasing the siblings’ quirky personalities and their close bond. The supporting cast shines as well, with Joey and Chandler providing comic relief and Phoebe and Mike offering a sweet and romantic subplot.

Aside from the entertainment value, the episode also explores themes of insecurity and ambition. Rachel’s struggles at work will resonate with anyone who has felt unsure of themselves in a new role, and her eventual triumph is a satisfying moment. Meanwhile, Phoebe and Mike’s bickering reflects the complexities of relationships, especially when two strong-willed individuals are involved.

Overall, “The One With The Routine” is a great addition to the Friends canon. The episode balances humor and heart, delivering a funny and charming story that captures the spirit of a New Year’s Eve celebration. Fans of the show will undoubtedly appreciate the memorable dance routine, the hilarious antics of the male characters, and the heartwarming moments shared by the core cast.
