Monica comes down with a case of chickenpox just as her old friend, Susie (Julia Roberts), returns to town and takes a liking to Chandler. Susie is an old high school classmate of Monica and Rachel, and she asks Chandler out on a date after he helps her carry a couch. Chandler, excited to finally be going on a date with a beautiful woman, begins getting ready for the evening, only to discover that he has chickenpox as well. Monica and Chandler decide to spend their time in isolation playing games and watching TV, but they quickly become bored.
Meanwhile, Joey has his own problems when he realizes that he has begun to fall for his roommate, Janine (Elle Macpherson). He tries to fight his feelings at first, but eventually decides to ask her out on a date. Janine agrees, but during their date, Joey discovers that they have nothing in common and that he does not actually have feelings for her after all.
Back at Monica's apartment, Ross is dying to catch chickenpox so that he can get it over with and be immune. He decides to go to drastic measures, including using Monica's infected towels and snuggling up with her in bed. Eventually, he gets chickenpox, but not before accidentally passing it on to Phoebe, who is horrified at the prospect of getting sick.
As the week goes on, Chandler and Susie continue to get closer, and Monica's jealousy grows. She decides to seduce Chandler by making him think Susie is interested in him only for his money, but her plan backfires when Chandler decides to break up with Susie because of her obsession with hand lotion. In the end, Monica and Chandler both recover from their chickenpox and reunite as friends once again.
