Rachel is having trouble dealing with the fact that she's never really had a relationship with her father. She decides to go meet him in hopes of starting a relationship with him. Meanwhile, Ross and Monica discover a mysterious growth in their childhood home that they refer to as "the ick factor." As they clean and prepare the house for a potential buyer, they become increasingly obsessed with the growth. Chandler and Joey convince Ross to call in an expert to take a look at it, but things don't go as planned when the expert turns out to be a gorgeous woman. As Ross tries to keep his composure and impress the woman, Chandler and Joey compete for her attention.
Meanwhile, Phoebe volunteers as a nurse in a hospital and becomes smitten with a patient named Mr. Adelman. She visits him every day and goes above and beyond to make him feel better. However, when she discovers that he's been discharged, she takes matters into her own hands and tries to bring him home with her.
Back at the apartment, Rachel visits with her father and is disappointed when he doesn't seem interested in building a relationship with her. She confides in Monica, who shares a story about reconnecting with her own father. Inspired by Monica's story, Rachel decides to reach out to her father one more time before giving up on their relationship.
As the episode comes to a close, Ross, Chandler, and Joey are left alone with "the ick factor." They realize that they've become so obsessed with the growth that they're risking losing the potential buyer for the house. In a hilarious moment that showcases their bond as friends, they band together to take on "the ick factor" once and for all.
