In the season 3 episode titled "Chess Pains," Frasier becomes obsessed with finding a single person to beat his father Martin in chess. As usual, Frasier is not content to let things go, and becomes more and more determined to find someone who can outsmart his dad. Martin is also determined, and the two of them end up playing a series of incredibly intense and competitive games. In the end, Frasier finds a player who he believes can finally beat his father, but things don't go quite as planned.

Meanwhile, Niles becomes frustrated with the lack of intimacy in his marriage to Maris. He enlists Frasier's help in finding a solution to this problem, but things don't go as planned there either.

Throughout the episode, there are various comedic moments and commentary on the relationship between fathers and sons and the nature of relationships. The writing is sharp, the performances are excellent, and the direction is top-notch. Overall, "Chess Pains" is a standout episode in an already excellent series.
