Ep 3. Washington's Colichemarde

In Forged in Fire Season 6 Episode 3, titled "Washington's Colichemarde", four skilled bladesmiths compete against each other to create one of the most iconic swords in history - the Colichemarde. The Colichemarde sword was used by French duellists in the 17th and 18th centuries, and it was known for its slim and elegant design that made it perfect for thrusting and parrying.

The first round of the competition is the blade forging challenge, where the contestants have to use their skills and creativity to make a blade that can withstand various tests and tasks. They have only 3 hours to create their blades using traditional techniques and materials, such as high carbon steel and charcoal fire. The judges, J. Neilson, David Baker, and Doug Marcaida, inspect and test the blades, looking for flaws, strength, and functionality. The weakest blade will be eliminated, and the remaining three contenders will advance to the next round.

In the second round, the remaining contestants have to craft the intricate Colichemarde hilt, which requires not only technical precision but also artistic flair. The hilt includes a unique guard with a distinctive S-curve shape that provides extra protection for the hand and wrist of the duellist. The bladesmiths have only 3 hours to complete this task, and they have to use brass and other metals to create an intricate and ornate design that fits the period and style of the Colichemarde sword.

The third and final round is the ultimate test of the blades and the bladesmiths' skills. They have to attach the blade and hilt together, polish and sharpen the sword, and then perform a series of physical and technical tests to prove the sword's worth. The tests include slicing through various materials, such as bamboo and rope, as well as stab and thrust tests that simulate real-world duelling scenarios. The judges observe and evaluate each test, looking for clean cuts, sharpness, balance, and overall performance.

At the end of the competition, only one bladesmith will be declared the Forged in Fire champion and the winner of a $10,000 prize. The contest is not only a test of their bladesmithing skills but also a tribute to the history and legacy of the Colichemarde sword and the duelling culture of 18th century France. It is a fascinating and exciting journey that combines art, history, and craftsmanship into a thrilling competition that showcases the best bladesmiths in the world.
