In Forged in Fire season 6 episode 26, titled "Napoleon's Saber," four bladesmiths are tasked with re-creating the iconic sword wielded by Napoleon Bonaparte himself. The episode begins with the smiths introducing themselves and explaining their backgrounds in bladesmithing.
The first challenge is to create the blade of the saber using the "canister" method, which involves stacking layers of steel in a canister and then heating it to create a single piece of steel. One of the smiths struggles with this technique, creating a blade that is not quite up to par. However, the other three smiths make impressive blades and move on to the next challenge.
For the second challenge, the smiths are given four hours to create the intricate guard and handle of the saber. They must choose between using brass or steel for the guard, and must also incorporate a napoleon-style "bee" into their design. All four smiths do well in this challenge, with some creating highly decorative handles that showcase their personal style.
The final challenge is a daunting one: Each smith must not only sharpen their blade to a razor's edge, but also pass a series of tests with their saber. First, they must demonstrate that their sword can easily cut through a series of ropes. Next, they must cut through a giant block of ice, followed by a series of pig carcasses. Finally, they must perform the dreaded "kill test" - slicing through a ballistic dummy with a human-like torso.
Throughout the episode, we see the contestants working tirelessly in their smithies, heating and hammering steel to mold it into their desired shapes. We also get a sense of the camaraderie between the smiths, who offer each other feedback and support throughout the competition.
As the episode draws to a close, the judges carefully evaluate each sword, considering its sharpness, balance, and overall quality. In the end, only one smith can emerge victorious and claim the title of Forged in Fire champion.
