In Forged in Fire season 5 episode 38, titled "The Bardiche," four bladesmiths compete to create a unique version of a European poleaxe known as the bardiche. The bardiche was a popular weapon among medieval infantry and was known for its long, curved blade and spike on the back, which could be used to grab and pull enemy combatants.
The episode opens with host Wil Willis introducing the four contestants and explaining the weapons they will be creating. Each bladesmith has a different approach to the bardiche, with some focusing on the curve of the blade and others on the length of the axe head. To add to the challenge, the bladesmiths must use traditional blacksmithing techniques such as coal forges and anvils.
As the bladesmiths work on forging their weapons, they face various obstacles such as warped steel and broken tools. They must also take into account the balance and weight distribution of their bardiches to ensure they are both effective weapons and aesthetically pleasing pieces.
Next, the bladesmiths move on to the grinding and sharpening phase, where they hone their blades to a razor's edge. This is a delicate process that requires precision and skill, as any imperfection in the blade could result in a weak point that could break during use.
Finally, the bladesmiths present their completed bardiches to a panel of expert judges, who put them to the test in a series of challenges. First, the weapons are tested for their sharpness by slicing through various materials such as ropes, leather, and bamboo. Then, they are tested for their durability by smashing into a slab of ice and chopping through a pig carcass.
As the judges deliberate, the tension mounts as the bladesmiths anxiously await the verdict. Ultimately, only one contestant will be declared the winner and take home the grand prize. Fans of Forged in Fire will not want to miss this exciting episode where bladesmiths are pushed to their limits to create a deadly and beautiful weapon.
