In the third episode of season 5 of Forged in Fire, the contestants are tasked with recreating the classic Venetian sword, the Schiavona. This unique sword was a symbol of wealth and power among the nobility of Venice during the Renaissance period.
The four bladesmiths must first use a coal forge to shape their sword blanks from high carbon steel. They then move on to the grinders, where they must create the signature S-shaped guard of the Schiavona. The guard was designed to protect the hand during duels and battles, and its intricate design requires immense skill and precision to create.
Once the guards are complete, the contestants move on to the handle. They must fashion a handle from wood, bone, or antler, and shape it to fit the hand comfortably. The handle must also be adorned with decorative elements that reflect the opulence of Renaissance Venice.
Finally, the bladesmiths move on to the blade itself. They must use their expertise to grind and shape the blade to a sharp edge, while maintaining the unique features of the Schiavona, such as its double-edged blade with a central ridge.
As the bladesmiths work, they are judged by a panel of experts, including Doug Marcaida, an edged weapons specialist, and David Baker, a historian of antique weapons. Each aspect of the sword is scrutinized, from the balance and weight of the blade to the quality of the handle materials.
In the end, only one bladesmith will emerge victorious, and their Schiavona will be added to the collection of the show's host, Wil Willis. The winner will also receive a cash prize and the title of Forged in Fire Champion.
The Schiavona is a challenging weapon to forge, requiring a high level of skill and attention to detail. It is a symbol of the wealth and power of Renaissance Venice, and earning the title of Forged in Fire Champion by recreating this iconic sword is a true feat of craftsmanship.
