As a trusted weapon-making competition series, Forged in Fire season 5 takes the patriotic legacy of sword making to a whole new level with its 26th episode, The Sengese. In this episode, the bladesmiths have to create their version of a Sengese knife, which is a unique form of a Nepalese knife, made with materials like high-carbon steel and brass. However, they have to adapt their designs to fit within a restricted time frame of just 3 hours.
The four skilled bladesmiths competing in this episode are Matt, Tony, Rafael, and Cened. In the introductory round, they are required to make their own signature style Damasus, or layered steel, to showcase their diverse forging techniques. They have 3 hours to accomplish this task, and it is worth noting that a bad performance here might result in them getting eliminated. The judges have high expectations for this round as it will significantly determine the smith's craftsmanship skill levels and thus helps them decide on the best bladesmith to forge the Sengese knife under strict time restrictions.
The judges are also quick to point out that the Sengese is not an ordinary knife but one with a story behind it. It is a knife that is used in religious ceremonies and, as such, must be treated with the utmost respect. They also emphasize that the knife must have certain specifications, including a 10-inch blade, a full tang, and a curved blade profile.
The four bladesmiths unleash their creativity and skills to forge their version of the Sengese. They carefully select their raw materials and sketch out their designs on paper before heading back to the forge to begin heating, cutting and shaping them into their desired form. The judges must keep a close eye on the bladesmith’s progress every step of the way, noting any deviations from the expected specifications and any flaws that may affect the blade’s durability.
Once all the blades are completed, the judges begin their rigorous testing process. They first conduct the strength and sharpness test to ensure that the blades are strong and razor-sharp enough. Next, they test their durability by subjecting the knives to a grueling chopping and slicing test. The bladesmiths observe this part of the process with bated breath, hoping that their blades are up to the judges’ standards.
After putting each blade through their tests, the judges then choose the two best blades to be transformed into an actual Sengese knife. The two bladesmiths are thrilled to have made it this far and eagerly await the final leg of the competition.
The remaining bladesmiths now have only three days to produce a fully functional Sengese that meets the exact specifications of the judges. Everyone works tirelessly to ensure that they deliver their best work. They must consider both the technical aspect of blade-making and the cultural significance of the knife, emphasizing the importance of treating it with respect. The bladesmiths have to pay close attention to the provided design plans and select the right materials to craft the knife carefully.
Once again, the judges go through the testing process, this time emphasizing the durability, aesthetics, and overall performance of the knives. After the tough testing phase, one of the bladesmiths emerges victorious, and the other leaves with a newfound appreciation for the art of blade-making.
Overall, Forged in Fire season 5, episode 26, The Sengese, showcases some of the most talented bladesmiths in the series as they work to create a unique knife that holds cultural significance. This episode highlights not only their technical skills and knowledge of working with steel, but also their ability to embrace and respect cultural traditions.
