Ep 1. Japanese Katana

In the first episode of Forged in Fire, the contestants are tasked with creating a Japanese Katana, one of the most iconic and deadly weapons in history. Four bladesmiths are selected to compete in a series of challenges designed to test their skills in crafting this legendary weapon.

The first round requires the bladesmiths to use a traditional coal forge to forge the blade's shape, starting with raw steel bars and working them into a rough shape before delicately hammering and grinding the blade to its final form. The judges inspect the blades and eliminate one of the contestants based on their craftsmanship and attention to detail.

In the second round, the remaining bladesmiths must harden their blades using a traditional clay quenching technique that has been used in Japan for hundreds of years. This requires covering the blade with a layer of clay, heating it to a high temperature, and then quickly cooling it in water, creating a hard edge and a softer, more flexible spine. The judges test the blades' strength and flexibility by hacking into a block of ice and wood.

Finally, the remaining two bladesmiths are sent to their home forges with only five days to create a fully functional Katana. They must use their own unique styles and techniques to create a blade that is both beautiful and deadly.
