In the 18th episode of the first season of Forever, titled "Dead Men Tell Long Tales," Dr. Henry Morgan and Detective Jo Martinez investigate a murder case that leads them down a path of history and family secrets.
The episode begins with a body being discovered in the Hudson River, and as Morgan and Martinez investigate the case, they discover that the man has been dead for over a century. This leads them to the man's great-great-grandson, who is shocked to learn about his ancestor's untimely death.
As the investigation progresses, Morgan and Martinez learn about the victim's family history, dating back to the early days of New York City. They discover that the victim's great-great-grandfather was a sailor who had been on a ship that sank in the Hudson River in the 1800s, and that he had been falsely accused of stealing a valuable artifact that was believed to have been on board the ship.
Morgan and Martinez also learn about the victim's own family history, and how his grandfather had gone to great lengths to try and clear his ancestor's name and prove his innocence. They discover that the grandfather had even gone so far as to attempt to steal the artifact himself, in order to prove that it had never been on the ship.
Amidst all of this history and mystery, Morgan also confronts his own past. He reflects on his own years as a sailor, and how he had lost his first love to the sea. He also begins to wonder about his own mortality, and whether or not he will ever find a way to break the curse that has kept him alive for so long.
As the episode draws to a close, Morgan and Martinez finally solve the case and bring resolution to the victim's family. But the deeper truth that they uncover is that some stories refuse to die, and that the past is never truly gone. The episode ends with Morgan standing alone by the river, lost in thought, wondering about the tale of his own life that will one day be told.
