Detective Nick Knight is a vampire who has fought his blood cravings for centuries, trying to redeem his past sins by serving as a homicide detective in Toronto. In season 1, episode 6, he investigates the brutal murder of a university professor, Dr. Sydney Lambert. The murder took place in her office, and Nick is puzzled by the fact that the killer did not leave any evidence behind. He questions all the professors in the department, but none of them seems to have any motive for the crime. Nick's investigation progesses when he meets the victim's daughter, Natalie, who is also a professor at the same university. Natalie is shaken by her mother's death and is determined to find the killer.
As Nick and Natalie work together to solve the case, they begin to form a bond, and Nick finds himself attracted to her. Natalie also shares a common interest in death, which Nick finds peculiar. She confesses that she is fascinated by the concept of death and wants to know what happens after a person dies. Nick, who has been alive for centuries, is both amused and intrigued by her curiosity. He shares his views on death, which he sees as a release from the pain of immortality.
Meanwhile, Nick's partner, Detective Schanke, is working on a separate case involving a group of counterfeiters. Schanke is convinced that the murderer is one of the professors and thinks that the counterfeiters might have some connection to the killing. Nick doesn't think that the two cases are related but follows Schanke’s investigation to keep an eye on him.
As Nick and Natalie gather evidence, they find a possible suspect who has ties to the victim's past. However, their investigation takes a turn when Natalie gets kidnapped by the killer. Nick uses his vampire strength and instincts to track down the killer and rescue Natalie before it's too late.
In the end, Nick discovers the killer's true motive, which is tied to the victim's research on near-death experiences. The killer was a former patient of Dr. Lambert who felt betrayed by her after an experiment went wrong. In a tense showdown, Nick apprehends the murderer and finally brings closure to the victim's family.
At the same time, Nick's relationship with Natalie grows. She awakens his human emotions, which he thought were long dead. However, Nick realizes that his vampire nature might prevent him from having a normal relationship with her. The episode ends with Nick pondering over his dilemma and wondering if he can ever find redemption and love in his life as a vampire.
