In the season 6, episode 7 of Forensic Files, titled "Something's Fishy," viewers witness an intriguing case involving the murder of a family man named Tom Foley.
The episode starts by introducing Tom's wife, who arrived home from running some errands to find her husband lying on the kitchen floor in a pool of blood. The couple's adult son was also in the house during the incident but didn't hear anything unusual.
As the investigation begins, detectives start to look at the scene of the crime, searching for any clues that could help them identify the culprit. During their search, they find a fishing tackle box that raises their suspicions.
Forensic scientists are soon brought in to analyze the contents of the box and determine whether it has anything to do with the murder. After examining the evidence, they find a hair that is not Tom's and concludes that the killer must have left it behind.
The investigators start to explore the fishing angle, which leads them to speak with the employees of a nearby bait and tackle store where Tom frequently bought his supplies. They soon find out that Tom had previously made a peculiar request for a certain type of fishing line that was only available at that specific store. Further investigation reveals that someone else had asked for the same fishing line and even left their phone number.
The detectives call the number and discover that the person who made the request was a man named Kevin, who also turned out to be a frequent customer at the bait and tackle store. They bring Kevin in for questioning and eventually obtain a hair sample to compare with the one found at the crime scene.
The forensic analysis confirms a match between Kevin's hair and the one found at the crime scene. Further evidence leads the detectives to the conclusion that Kevin was jealous of Tom's close relationship with his wife and son. Kevin had also been fired from his job as an electrician, which he blamed on Tom.
The detectives found out that on the day of the murder, Kevin made several phone calls to the Foley residence to make sure that Tom was still at home. He then drove to the house and committed the murder.
After being presented with the evidence by the detectives, Kevin breaks down and confesses to the crime. He revealed that he had initially planned to make the murder look like a burglary, but things went awry, and he ended up killing Tom in a fit of rage.
The episode concludes with a recap of how forensic science and detective work helped bring a killer to justice. Viewers are left with a greater understanding of the importance of forensic evidence in criminal investigations and how it can help unlock the truth behind even the most challenging cases.
