Ep 33. Gone Ballistic, Part 2
- April 1, 2011
In the second part of the two-part series, Forensic Files explores the aftermath of the shooting that took place in a small Wisconsin town. With one person dead and another injured, the police work tirelessly to find the shooter and bring them to justice.
The episode begins with the audio recordings of the 911 call made by the bystander who witnessed the shooting. The police arrive on the scene and find two victims - one dead and one fighting for their life. With no leads and little evidence, the police turn to the forensic experts to help them solve the case.
The forensic team begins by analyzing the bullet fragments recovered from the crime scene. By examining the markings on the fragments, they are able to determine the caliber and even the brand of the gun used. They also analyze the bullet holes in a nearby building, which gives them a better idea of the trajectory of the bullet and therefore the position of the shooter.
Next, the team turns their attention to the victim who survived the shooting. By interviewing him and examining his injuries, they are able to determine the angle at which he was shot and the distance between him and the shooter. They also find gunpowder residue on his clothes, which helps them to narrow down the type of weapon used.
Using this evidence, the forensic team creates a 3D model of the crime scene, which they use to recreate the shooting. By analyzing the trajectory of the bullet and the position of the victim, they are able to determine the exact location of the shooter.
With this information, the police are able to identify a suspect, who is arrested and charged with the crime. However, the suspect maintains his innocence and claims that he was not involved in the shooting. To prove his innocence, he agrees to a gunshot residue test.
The gunshot residue test is a common forensic technique that is used to determine if a person has recently fired a gun. By analyzing the residue left on the hands and clothes of the suspect, the forensic team is able to determine if he was the shooter.
The results of the test are inconclusive, leaving the case in limbo. However, the forensic team is not ready to give up yet. They continue their investigation, analyzing every piece of evidence they have in an attempt to find the truth.
In the end, the forensic team is able to uncover a crucial piece of evidence that changes everything. With this new evidence, the police are able to build a stronger case against the suspect, eventually leading to a guilty verdict.
This episode of Forensic Files is a fascinating look at the techniques and technologies that are used by forensic experts to solve crimes. It demonstrates the importance of forensic science in modern criminal investigations and highlights the dedication and expertise of the professionals involved.
