Forensic Files season 13 episode 16 titled "Last Dance" explores the case of 44-year-old actress Adrienne Shelly who was found hanging from a shower rod in her bathroom in Greenwich Village, New York in November 2006. At first, the authorities thought it was a suicide, but as investigations proceeded, it became clear that there was more to the story than met the eye.

Shelly had achieved some success in the entertainment industry, with her most prominent role being in "Waitress," a film she wrote, directed, and acted in that premiered at Sundance. However, she had been struggling to make ends meet, and her financial troubles were causing her severe stress.

Detectives soon discovered that a construction worker working in the building where Shelly's apartment was located was involved in the case. He had been working on a nearby apartment and entered Shelly's apartment to do some minor repairs. It was later revealed that he had gotten into a heated argument with Shelly, and he hit her, causing her to die.

The construction worker, identified as Diego Pillco, initially told investigators he hit Shelly in self-defense. However, evidence, including the fabric from his work clothes that was found wrapped around Shelly's neck, proved otherwise. Surprisingly, it was a tiny piece of lint from Pillco's uniform that provided the most conclusive evidence. The lint matched that found on the knot that was used to tie Shelly up, thus connecting him directly to the scene of the crime.

The detectives used forensic evidence, including DNA and handwriting analysis, to piece together the sequence of events leading to Shelly's death. They also spoke to neighbors and friends who provided insights that helped formulate the prosecution's case. Eventually, Diego Pillco was tried and convicted of murder, sentencing him to 25 years in prison.

"Last Dance" is a gripping episode that highlights the importance of forensic evidence in solving crimes and bringing perpetrators to justice. The case of Adrienne Shelly is an example of how the smallest piece of evidence can serve as a critical turning point in a criminal investigation. The episode takes viewers on a journey, starting from the discovery of Shelly's body to the conviction of Pillco. It showcases the expertise, patience, and dedication of the forensic investigators and other professionals involved in the case. Overall, "Last Dance" is a must-watch episode that provides a thrilling look into the world of forensic investigation and criminal justice.
