Capitol Crimes is the third episode of Forensic Files season 11. The show begins with a tangle of crime scenes all over Washington, D.C. Multiple bank robberies, a sniper shooting at people, and a car bomb- it seems like the city is under attack. The FBI takes up on the case the moment these crimes start getting reported. As it delves deeper into the investigations, it becomes clear that they are all the work of the same person.
The criminals behind these crimes are smart, and make no mistakes until the last robbery, when a GPS tracker attached to the bag of money, leads the police to the house of one of the robbers. Upon interrogation, one of the robbers admits that a woman helped them plan and conduct the robberies and shootings, who goes by the name, "Sarah".
But, who is Sarah, and what’s her motive?
The forensic team takes up on the investigation of the woman who seemed to have caught the eye of some of the criminals. They find that Sarah was a woman, working as a bank teller, who was tired of her low-income job and wanted to make more money to support herself and her children. She knew exactly how banks operated, and had studied them for years. She kept notes on the security measures of various banks, and planned the robberies in such a way that they would go smoothly.
Not only that, but Sara was also helped by a man named John, who was an ex-marine and had tried to rob a bank some years ago. They targeted banks with large sums of money and those who were lax in their security measures.
The forensic team uncovers many significant pieces of evidence that helped to link both Sarah and John to all the crimes that were committed. They found DNA evidence from a hat that Sarah wore during one of the robberies and the backpack used to carry the money.
They also discovered that the same gun, which was used to shoot at multiple people, including the sniper one, was used in all the crimes, leaving no doubt that it was the same criminals involved in each case.
With all of these pieces of evidence coming together, the forensic team is able to build a strong case against Sarah and John, culminating in their arrest and conviction.
The show closes with a statement from a lead investigator, stating that it was one of the most significant cases he had ever worked on. Capitol Crimes is a testament to the power of forensic science, and how it can help bring criminals to justice.
