Follow The Money (Bedrag in Danish) is a Danish crime thriller TV series from Arrow Films that aired from 2016 to 2019. The show revolves around the world of financial crime, greed, and corruption. The series was created by Jeppe Gjervig Gram, who is also known for his work on The Killing, and it was directed by Jannik Tai Mosholt and Søren Balle.
The show's plot starts with the discovery of a dead body by a wind farm located in the North Sea. This event marks the beginning of a complex web of financial crimes and deals, as it turns out the dead man had connections to the energy company Energreen, which, in turn, is involved in suspicious and illegal activities, including money laundering and fraud. Detective Mads Justesen, who is portrayed by Thomas Bo Larsen, is assigned to the case and starts an investigation that leads him into the intricate world of financial crime. Along the way, he reunites with his former colleague Alf (played by Nikolaj Lie Kaas), who now works in the legal department of Energreen.
As the story unfolds, we are introduced to a cast of characters who are all connected to Energreen in one way or another. There's the ambitious CEO, Sander Søndergaard (played by David Dencik), who is obsessed with the idea of creating a sustainable energy company, even if it means bending the law. Claudia (played by Maria Rich), one of his employees, is equally driven, but her ethics are more questionable. We also meet Nicky (played by Esben Smed), a mechanic who gets caught up in Energreen's schemes and becomes an unwitting accomplice to its crimes.
Meanwhile, Mads Justesen follows the money trail and tracks down the individuals responsible for the fraudulent activities, including the mysterious accountant Anna (played by Julie Grundtvig Wester), who seems to have all the answers to his questions. But as he delves deeper into the investigation, he realizes that the case is more complex than he initially thought and that corruption and greed are pervasive in the world of finance.
Follow The Money is a masterful blend of crime drama and thriller, with a compelling and intricate storyline that keeps the viewers hooked throughout its three seasons. The show's strength lies in its ability to portray the world of finance realistically, with accurate depictions of financial transactions, insider trading, and money laundering. The characters are well-developed and three-dimensional, with each having their own motivations, flaws, and secrets.
Aside from the excellent writing and storytelling, the show's production value is impressive, with stunning cinematography and a haunting score that adds to the tension and suspense. The use of locations such as the wind farm and the Copenhagen Stock Exchange adds authenticity and depth to the storyline.
Overall, Follow The Money is a must-see for fans of crime dramas, thrillers, and the genre of Nordic Noir. It is a thought-provoking and engaging show that explores the dark side of finance and human nature. The show's themes of greed, corruption, and the price of power are universal and relevant, making it a show that transcends cultural boundaries.
