Flipped is a comedy series from Quibi that follows the story of a couple of wannabe TV house flippers who get in over their heads when they purchase a drug cartel's house in the hopes of renovating and selling it for a profit. The main characters, Jann and Cricket Melfi, are played by Kaitlin Olson and Will Forte, respectively. They have been married for a few years and have been trying to make a name for themselves in the world of flipping houses, but without much success. Luis Moncada, who plays the drug cartel's enforcer, serves as a foil to the couple's misadventures.
The show is structured around a number of different narrative devices that include interviews with the main characters, mockumentary-style interjections by supporting characters, and moments of heightened reality that take the audience inside the minds of the characters. These different stylistic choices give the series a playful tone that is both irreverent and self-aware.
The strengths of the show come from the comic timing and chemistry between Forte and Olson. Their characters' relationship is the driving force behind the humor of the show, as they are constantly bickering and getting into ridiculous situations. Although their characters are not always likeable, they are always entertaining. Moncada is also a scene-stealer as the imposing cartel member who is always looming in the background of the couple's escapades. He provides a grounding presence that helps to balance out the absurdity of the show.
The series is able to get a lot of mileage out of the dynamic between the couple, as well as the clever ways in which they try to get their flip house off the ground. Each episode follows the same basic arc: Jann and Cricket run into a problem, are momentarily stymied, and then come up with a zany solution that puts them even more in over their heads. While the show can start to feel repetitive at times, the inventiveness of the characters' schemes keeps things fresh.
One of the ways in which the show sets itself apart from other comedies is through its use of mockumentary techniques. At various points throughout each episode, characters will break the fourth wall and speak directly to the camera, often discussing their motivations or thoughts on the current situation. Sometimes they will even address the camera crew, which adds another level of meta humor to the proceedings.
Overall, Flipped is a enjoyable and well-crafted comedy series that will appeal to fans of shows like Arrested Development or It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia. The comic pairing of Forte and Olson is the highlight of the show, and their characters' penchant for absurdity will keep you engaged and laughing throughout the season. While the show may not have the depth of some more serious dramas, it more than makes up for it with its high-energy performances and clever writing.
