In the first episode of Flea Market Flip’s sixth season, it’s a battle between two teams who know how to have a good time: Rockers versus Besties. First up are the Rockers, an all-male team who claim to be experts in repurposing musical instruments and sound equipment. The Besties, on the other hand, consist of two girlfriends who love thrifting and DIY projects.
Host Lara Spencer meets the teams at the Brimfield Antique Show in Massachusetts, where they have $500 and one hour to find three items to flip. The teams quickly split up, with the Rockers heading to a booth specializing in vintage speakers, while the Besties gravitate towards a table filled with eclectic home decor.
The Rockers’ first find is a set of rusty, beat-up metal drawers that once held sound equipment. They negotiate with the vendor and purchase them for $90. Meanwhile, the Besties stumble upon an unusual item - a vintage wooden bowling pin - and snag it for $15.
Next, the teams move onto the second item on their list. The Rockers spot a vintage jukebox and immediately decide that it’s perfect for their rock n’ roll aesthetic. They shell out $350 for it and struggle to figure out how to transport it back to their workroom. The Besties, on the other hand, find a set of four midcentury modern chairs for $90.
The last item on the list proves to be a tough one for both teams. The Rockers initially have their sights set on a vintage guitar, but it’s priced at $500, well above their budget. They eventually settle on a set of vintage luggage - an old suitcase and hatbox - for $55. Meanwhile, the Besties are torn between a vintage typewriter and an antique sled, ultimately choosing the sled for $50.
Back at the workroom, the Rockers get straight to work disassembling the jukebox and transforming the parts into a cool storage unit. They clean up the metal drawers and use them as pull-out compartments for vinyl records, while the colorful jukebox lights serve as an eye-catching display. They also repurpose the vintage luggage by sanding, painting, and attaching hairpin legs to create a stylish side table.
The Besties dive into the sanding and painting process as well, working to restore the midcentury modern chairs to their former glory. They also create a unique coffee table out of the vintage sled, using the wooden planks to construct the tabletop and fitting the metal runners with wheels for easy mobility.
After a long day of hard work, the teams reconvene at the flea market to sell their items. They quickly learn that it’s not just about having a great product - it’s about having the right sales pitch and interacting with potential customers. The Besties attract attention with their cheerful demeanor and clever puns, while the Rockers use their musical talents to lure in customers with catchy tunes.
In the end, both teams make impressive sales. The Besties sell their midcentury modern chairs for $550, the vintage sled coffee table for $200, and the bowling pin for $35. The Rockers sell their repurposed jukebox storage unit for $650, the vintage luggage side table for $175, and the metal drawer record holder for $75.
It’s a close call, but in the end, there can only be one winner. Lara adds up the profits and announces that the Besties have made a total profit of $785, while the Rockers come out on top with a total profit of $810. The Rockers celebrate their victory with a triumphant performance, while the Besties take their defeat in stride and vow to come back stronger next time.
