Flatbush Misdemeanors is a comedy-drama series created by Kevin Iso and Dan Perlman, and it revolves around two friends, Kevin (played by Kevin Iso) and Dan (played by Dan Perlman), trying to navigate their lives in the Flatbush neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York. The series takes a humorous yet poignant look at the everyday struggles of two Black people in America.
In the first episode of season 1 titled Leanin', we are introduced to Kevin and Dan, who are roommates and best friends. Kevin is a struggling stand-up comedian who works at a bar, while Dan is a teacher who is dealing with a recent breakup. The episode kicks off with Kevin trying to find new material for his upcoming stand-up gig, and Dan trying to get over his ex-girlfriend by attending parties and hanging out with the wrong crowd.
The episode starts with the two friends walking down a busy street, and we quickly see their different personalities. Kevin is a lot more confident and outgoing, while Dan is more reserved and shy. We learn that they have been friends since childhood, and they have a great chemistry in their banter and humor.
Throughout the episode, we see Kevin struggling to come up with new material for his stand-up routine. He tries to observe people in the bar and takes notes, but he doesn't seem to be getting anywhere. Meanwhile, Dan is trying to make new friends, and he attends a party where he meets a guy named C.J.
C.J. is a drug dealer who takes a liking to Dan, and he invites him to hang out with him and his friends. Dan, who is desperate for some excitement in his life, agrees to go with him. However, things take a turn for the worse when they end up getting arrested for drug possession.
The episode takes a serious turn here, and we see the consequences of their actions. Kevin and Dan are forced to spend the night in jail, and they realize how precarious their situation is. They both know that they need to make some changes in their lives, but they don't know how to do it.
Leanin' is a great introduction to the characters and their lives. It sets up the tone and the themes of the show, which is a mixture of comedy and drama. The show tackles issues such as race, class, and gentrification in a way that is funny, but also thought-provoking. The chemistry between Kevin and Dan is also a highlight of the show, and it will be interesting to see how their friendship develops over the course of the series.
Overall, Leanin' does a great job of setting up the show's premise and introducing the characters. It's a funny yet poignant episode that explores the struggles of two friends trying to find their way in life.
