In episode 9 of season 4 of Fixer to Fabulous, hosts Dave and Jenny Marrs take on a particularly challenging renovation for a couple who wants to transform their builder-grade 1990s home into a custom craftsman-style oasis. The couple, Rusty and Jordan, have always dreamed of owning a house with more character, but with a limited budget, they weren't sure it was possible. Dave and Jenny assure them that they can still achieve their dream home with some smart design choices and strategic upgrades.
The episode kicks off with Dave and Jenny assessing the current state of Rusty and Jordan's home. They note that while the bones of the house are good, it lacks the warmth and charm that the couple desires. They make a plan to create a cohesive design that incorporates craftsman-style details like wood paneling, beams, and custom cabinetry. They also want to open up the main living space to create a more welcoming atmosphere.
The first major project on the list is tackling the outdated kitchen. Dave and Jenny decide to remove a large soffit that's been blocking natural light from the room, which instantly makes the space feel more open and airy. They also replace the existing cabinetry with custom maple cabinets that have a craftsman-style design. The new cabinets are painted a soft gray-blue color that's both on-trend and timeless. To top it off, Dave and Jenny install a classic subway tile backsplash and modern stainless steel appliances.
Next up is the living room, which is currently separated from the kitchen by a wall. Dave and Jenny decide to remove the wall to create a more open floor plan. They install wood paneling on the ceiling to add warmth and character, and a custom-built entertainment center provides extra storage and creates a focal point for the room. The fireplace gets a major upgrade as well, with new tile surround and a custom wood mantle.
Another big project on the list is adding a new custom-built mudroom. Rusty and Jordan have two young children and two dogs, so having a space to corral all their stuff is essential. Dave and Jenny create a spacious mudroom with plenty of built-in storage for backpacks, shoes, and coats. They also add a fun and functional dog washing station, complete with a built-in drain and stainless steel basin.
Throughout the episode, Dave and Jenny face a few hiccups, like unexpected electrical issues and shipping delays on some of the custom cabinetry. However, they always find creative solutions and keep the project moving forward. The end result is a stunning custom craftsman-style home that Rusty and Jordan absolutely love. The warm wood tones and thoughtful design touches make the house feel like a truly unique and special space.
