Ep 5. Sweet Child O' Mine

Kate's mother has a baby with Travis, and Kate is the one who has to take care of her baby brother since her mother is busy working to provide for their family and Travis. The responsibility on young Kate's shoulders takes a toll on her, and she feels like she doesn't have a connection with anyone. Her mother is always working, and Travis treats her like she is not in the house. Kate finally snaps when she hears her mother and Travis discussing plans for their future. Kate feels like she has been left out of their new family that they are building.

In the present day, Kate still carries issues from her childhood that she has never been able to confront. She is surprised to find out that Travis has come back into their life because her mom is sick. Kate is still angry at him and the effect he had on her childhood, but she wants to be there for her mother. When they talk, Kate finally opens up to Travis and tells him what she has been holding in all these years. The conversation is both cathartic and healing for Kate.

Meanwhile, Tully is working on her new show called The Girlfriend Hour, which explores the complicated relationship between women and their best friends. Her producer ideas don't go well with Tully's vision, and Tully falls out with him. But as she delves deeper into the stories of women and their friendships, she begins to reflect on her own friendship with Kate.

In another part of the episode, Tully thinks back to a time when Kate told her to be careful with the thing she said on the radio about her relationship with her mother. In a flashback, Tully remembers that her mother heard her talk about her on the radio and felt like she was not portraying her well. She felt like Tully was airing their business in public, which led to a heated argument. Tully realizes that she has to be more careful with her words and piece of her comments' potential impact that it might have on her loved ones.

The episode ends with Kate standing on Firefly Lane with her mother, who is now feeling much better. They reminisce about when they first moved to Seattle, and Kate wishes out loud for things to go back to how they were. As the episode ends, Tully stands outside Kate's house, watching them through the window, feeling a sense of longing for the past.

Overall, Sweet Child O' Mine is a poignant episode that delves deep into Kate's character development. By shining a spotlight on her childhood and her strained relationship with Travis, we come to understand why she is the way she is today.
