In Finding Your Roots season 2 episode 2 titled "Born Champions," host Henry Louis Gates Jr. delves into the ancestry of three iconic athletes: Derek Jeter, Billie Jean King, and Rebecca Lobo.

First up is former New York Yankees shortstop and future Hall of Famer Derek Jeter. We learn about his ancestors’ journey to America from Ireland and Germany, and how they overcame adversity to achieve their dreams. Jeter’s father, a former Army officer, served in Vietnam and faced racial discrimination upon returning home. Through research of military records and census data, Gates reveals how Jeter’s ancestors also served in the military and sparked change within their own communities.

Next, Gates explores the family history of tennis legend Billie Jean King. He uncovers a long line of strong, independent women in King’s family who broke down barriers and paved the way for future generations. We learn about King’s great-grandmother, who fought for women’s suffrage in America, and her grandmother, who immigrated to the United States from Ireland in search of a better life. Through interviews with King and her brother, Gates discovers the challenges she faced as a female athlete in the 1960s and '70s, including battling for equal pay and opportunities for female players.

Finally, Gates examines the roots of former WNBA player and Olympic gold medalist Rebecca Lobo. He uncovers an unexpected connection to American colonial history, as Lobo’s ancestors played a role in the settlement of Farmington, Connecticut in the 1600s. Gates also traces Lobo’s lineage back to Italy, where her great-great-grandfather was a renowned sculptor. Through interviews with Lobo and her family members, Gates reveals the sacrifices they made in order for her to pursue her dreams of playing basketball at the highest level.

Overall, "Born Champions" is a fascinating exploration of the ancestral roots of three legendary athletes and the perseverance and determination that runs in their families. Gates' research not only sheds light on their individual backgrounds, but also reveals broader insights into the history of race, gender, and immigration in America.
