In the third episode of Fawlty Towers season 1, titled "The Wedding," Basil Fawlty and his crew at the hotel are preparing for a wedding reception that is being held in the hotel's function room. The bride's father, Mr. Johnson, is a bit of a tyrant and is very particular about how things should be done. Basil is eager to please, hoping to secure more business from Mr. Johnson in the future, but things quickly get out of hand.
Basil's attempts to impress Mr. Johnson and his family start off on the wrong foot when he mistakenly thinks that the groom's father is an Indian doctor who needs a room for the night. Instead, the man is an Englishman and the registrar who is conducting the wedding. Basil's blatant ignorance and racism leave the registrar and other members of the wedding party feeling uncomfortable.
As the wedding reception begins, the tension continues to rise. Basil's clumsy attempts to impress Mr. Johnson cause one mishap after another. The food is not to Mr. Johnson's liking, the wine isn't cooled down enough, and the band is playing the wrong kind of music.
Meanwhile, Polly, the receptionist, has been tasked with watching over Mr. Johnson's beloved dog while he attends the reception. Chaos ensues as the dog runs off and wreaks havoc throughout the hotel, leading to a series of hilarious mishaps as Basil and the others try to catch the runaway pup.
To make matters worse, Basil's wife Sybil has gotten herself into a pickle, having promised to "entertain" Mr. Johnson's nephew while he is at the reception. In typical Fawlty Towers fashion, things go awry when a jealous husband shows up, mistaking Sybil's attentions for something more sinister.
As the night wears on, things continue to spiral out of control. Mr. Johnson becomes increasingly furious with Basil, and the hotel staff become increasingly frantic in their attempts to get everything back on track. With the wedding guests growing more and more restless, it's up to Basil to try and salvage what's left of the night.
"The Wedding" episode of Fawlty Towers is a classic example of the show's unique blend of farce and satire. With its mix of slapstick humor, witty dialogue, and absurd situations, it remains a fan favorite to this day. Through its unforgettable characters and hilarious hijinks, Fawlty Towers continues to be celebrated as one of the most beloved British sitcoms of all time.
