In the third episode of Father Ted, titled "The Passion of St Tibulus," the small island community is in an uproar over the impending release of a controversial film that is set to premiere on Craggy Island. The film, called "The Passion of St Tibulus," depicts a highly provocative and sexualized portrayal of the life of Jesus and has been banned in every country except Ireland.
Father Ted and Father Dougal are tasked with organizing a protest against the film, which is being screened at the local cinema. Meanwhile, Father Jack is oblivious to the commotion and spends the majority of the episode drunk and asleep.
Father Ted is hesitant to organize a protest and initially tries to avoid it altogether, but he is soon pressured into doing so by the Bishop. The only problem is, no one in the community seems to care about the film or the protest, and the turnout is dismal.
As the premiere approaches, Father Ted tries to stir up more excitement for the protest, but his efforts are in vain. Despite their lack of support, Father Ted and Father Dougal march towards the cinema, with Father Jack following behind on his wheelchair.
At the cinema, the trio is met with a large group of protesters who are already gathered, led by a fire-and-brimstone priest named Father Dick Byrne. However, the protest is quickly derailed when the group realizes that Father Jack has accidentally been left behind at the starting point.
Father Ted and Father Dougal rush to retrieve Father Jack, but they are stopped by a group of film enthusiasts who are excited to watch the controversial movie. Father Ted attempts to reason with them, but his efforts are in vain, and the trio is ultimately forced to return to the protest without Father Jack.
Throughout the protest, Father Ted attempts to motivate the group and rally them against the movie, but his efforts are continually thwarted by Father Dick Byrne and his own ineptitude. Father Dougal, meanwhile, is more concerned with gathering signatures for a petition against small animals on television.
As the premiere begins, Father Ted and Father Dougal enter the cinema in an attempt to halt the screening. However, they are quickly ejected and forced back outside, where they continue to protest unsuccessfully.
In the end, the screening of "The Passion of St Tibulus" concludes without incident, and the islanders are left completely unaffected by the events of the day. Father Ted is left feeling completely defeated and unsure of how to proceed, while Father Jack remains asleep in his wheelchair, oblivious to the entire ordeal.
Overall, "The Passion of St Tibulus" is a hilarious and absurd satire of religious fanaticism and small-town mentality, with Father Ted and his colleagues flailing about in their attempts to make a difference. Though their efforts are ultimately unsuccessful, their misadventures make for a highly entertaining episode.
