- August 31, 2004
In the first episode of Father of the Pride season 1 titled "What's Black and White and Depressed All Over?" we are introduced to the main characters of the show. The show revolves around a family of white lions who perform in the Siegfried and Roy show in Las Vegas. The main character, Larry, is a white lion who is the father of two cubs named Sierra and Hunter.
The episode begins with the Siegfried and Roy show where Larry and his wife, Kate, are performing a dangerous stunt involving a giant ball. However, during the show, Larry accidentally falls off the ball which results in him injuring his back. Because of this, he is forced to stay away from performing and resume his responsibilities as a stay-at-home dad.
From here, we see Larry trying to navigate through his new role as a caregiver for his cubs while his wife takes on the responsibility of being the main performer. We see Larry struggle with typical parent-stressors such as lack of sleep and having to take care of his cubs' dirty diapers. He also encounters some difficulties when his cubs are not behaving and leave him in a messy situation.
While all this is happening, we also see the main antagonist of the show, Snack the gazelle, who is jealous of the white lions' fame and fortune. He even tries to sabotage a performance by cutting the ropes holding up a giant ice sculpture. However, this plan backfires when the sculpture lands on him instead, leaving him trapped under the ice.
Throughout the episode, Snack continues to try and sabotage the white lions in various ways but fails miserably, leading to humorous situations.
The episode concludes with Larry realizing that being a caregiver for his cubs is tougher than he thought, but he eventually gets the help of another stay-at-home dad among the animals in the zoo. We see him finally getting a groove in his new role while his wife continues to excel in her career.
Overall, "What's Black and White and Depressed All Over?" is a lighthearted and humorous start to the series, showcasing the struggles of parenthood from the unique perspective of a family of performing lions. The themes of family, love, and hard work are prevalent throughout the episode and set the tone for the rest of the series.
