Fate/Zero season 1 episode 9, Master and Servant, continues the battle between the seven Masters and their Servants. The episode starts off with Kiritsugu and Saber discussing their strategy to defeat the other Masters while they rest in their temporary hideout.
Meanwhile, Kirei and Archer have a conversation about their respective motivations. Kirei reveals that he doesn't understand why he enjoys watching the destruction caused by the Holy Grail War, but Archer suggests that it could be because Kirei is finally able to indulge in his true nature without any guilt or consequences.
Back at the hideout, Irisviel and Maiya have a conversation about their pasts and how they came to be involved in the Holy Grail War. Irisviel reveals that she was created for the sole purpose of being a vessel for the Holy Grail while Maiya explains that she was originally an assassin who was hired to protect Irisviel but eventually developed a real bond with her.
The episode then shifts to a battle between Lancer and Saber. Lancer proves to be a formidable opponent, easily evading Saber's attacks and even managing to trap her sword in his spear. However, Saber is able to break free and the two engage in a fierce battle.
Elsewhere, Caster has taken Kayneth hostage and is planning to use him as a sacrifice for his upcoming ritual. However, Sola-Ui shows up and offers to take Kayneth's place as the sacrifice. Back at the battle between Saber and Lancer, Kiritsugu sees an opportunity to take out Lancer by using his sniper rifle. However, his shot is blocked by Lancer's Master, who reveals himself to be Kirei. Kirei taunts Kiritsugu and they engage in a game of cat and mouse as Kiritsugu tries to get a clear shot at Lancer.
The episode ends with yet another twist as Kariya confronts Tokiomi and demands that he give Sakura back to him. Tokiomi reveals that he never had any intention of letting Sakura go, and that Kariya was only ever a pawn in his plan to obtain the Holy Grail.
