John Crichton, a human astronaut lost in a distant galaxy, awakens changed in "Unrealized Reality," the eleventh episode of Farscape's fourth season. Trapped in a world that appears to be his home, John must make a life-altering decision that affects not just his own reality but all of those aboard the starship Moya.
As the episode begins, John is happily married to his high school sweetheart, Alex. Together they have two children, a son and a daughter. In this world, John is a well-known astronaut who has never been to space. Instead, he is the commander of a shuttle mission that helps scientists study a black hole from a safe distance. John is content with his life, but he begins to experience strange visions as he sleeps. When he awakens, he finds himself on the Moya, alone and disconnected from reality.
As the Moya crew try to bring John back to consciousness, they discover that he is trapped in an unrealized reality. This reality is the result of a neural clone that was created of John when he was brain-damaged by a radiation spike. The neural clone was meant to be a backup of John's personality, but it became sentient and created its own world where John never left Earth.
In this alternate reality, John is faced with a difficult choice. He must choose between staying in this perfect world with his family or returning to the real world, where he is a part of a family of his own making. The choice is made even harder by the fact that John has no memory of Moya or his life with his crewmates.
As the rest of the Moya crew work to bring John back to reality, they are also forced to confront their own unfulfilled desires. Zhaan is faced with the reality of the life she could have had if she had not given it up to become a spiritual leader. D'Argo is confronted with the realization that he has never allowed himself to love anyone as deeply as John loves his family. Chiana and Rygel both discover what it might have been like to have families of their own.
The episode is a meditation on the nature of reality, the nature of identity, and the choices we make when faced with those things. It is a haunting, beautiful episode that explores the desires we hold within ourselves and the ways in which we prevent ourselves from achieving them.
"Unrealized Reality" forces the viewer to question the very nature of reality and the choices we make in our lives. It is a profound episode that asks important philosophical questions about what it means to be human and how we come to terms with our own mortality. Ultimately, the episode asks us to consider our own choices and the paths we take, and whether or not we are truly living the lives we want for ourselves.
