John Crichton and his crew on Moya come across a strange planet known as Arnessk. The planet is home to numerous scavengers who feed off the remains of destroyed ships and artifacts. On Arnessk, Crichton finds a piece of technology that can power all of Moya's systems for a year.
Crichton and D'Argo go down to the planet to retrieve the technology, but they get separated. D'Argo is captured by the scavengers and Crichton is left stranded on the planet. Crichton meets a young woman named Jool who is also stranded on the planet. She is an expert in xenobiology and they team up to try to save D'Argo.
Meanwhile, Moya is experiencing strange malfunctions that could lead to her destruction. Zhaan and Rygel try to fix the problems, but they realize they need Crichton's expertise. Zhaan and Rygel decide to go down to the planet to find Crichton. However, they also get separated and Rygel is captured by the scavengers.
On Arnessk, Crichton and Jool discover that the scavengers are actually full of valuable information and they use this knowledge to bargain for D'Argo and Rygel's release. They manage to get the technology they need to fix Moya's malfunctions, but they are also faced with a difficult decision.
Crichton has grown attached to Jool and wants to take her with them on their adventures. However, she is hesitant to leave Arnessk where she feels she has finally found a sense of home.
At the end of the episode, the crew of Moya is reunited and they are able to fix their ship's malfunctions. However, Crichton is left with mixed feelings as he ponders the meaning of home and what it truly means to the people he has met on his journey through the universe.
