The Deneans are in the midst of an election, and tensions are high between the two candidates - Tak and Joolah. Tak, the current leader, is running against Joolah, a charismatic young Denean who promises to bring change to their society and challenge Tak's traditional ways.
As Crichton and the crew try to find a way off the planet, they become embroiled in the political turmoil of the Deneans. Tak, fearing that Joolah's progressive views will threaten the stability of their society, resorts to underhanded tactics to discredit her campaign.
