In Family Matters season 4 episode 5, titled "Rumor Has It," a rumor spreads around the neighborhood that Laura and her friend Maxine are lesbians. Steve, Laura's long-time admirer, overhears the rumor and believes that this is his chance to finally win Laura's heart. However, Myra, Steve's girlfriend and Laura's former rival, also hears the rumor and becomes jealous.
As the rumor spreads, Laura and Maxine are mocked and ostracized by their classmates. Feeling embarrassed and frustrated, Laura confronts Maxine, accusing her of starting the rumor. Maxine denies any involvement and reveals that the rumor actually started because of a misunderstanding with a boy who saw them sharing a milkshake. Together, they come up with a plan to clear their names and end the rumor once and for all.
Meanwhile, Steve takes it upon himself to defend Laura's honor and confronts the students who are making fun of her. However, his actions only make things worse and he ends up being humiliated in front of everyone. Myra, seeing Steve's humiliation, feels sorry for him and decides to forgive him for his past transgressions.
In the end, Laura and Maxine successfully clear their names and the rumor dies down. Steve realizes that his pursuit of Laura was misguided and decides to focus on his friendship with her instead. Myra and Steve make amends and their relationship seems to be back on track.
