After the opening credits, the Griffins are seen sitting down watching TV, when Tom Tucker comes on and announces that Mayor West has declared a war on drugs. Peter is called into duty as a detective and is partnered up with Joe Swanson, who is revealed to have an intense hatred for drugs due to his past experiences with addiction. During the first day on the job, Peter and Joe go undercover at a rehab clinic where they discover that one of the orderlies is stealing drugs.

Meanwhile, Brian, who is searching for a new purpose in life, decides to become a police dog and enrolls in the local K-9 police academy. Despite his lack of enthusiasm, Brian quickly rises to the top of the class and impresses his instructor, a no-nonsense female police officer named Miranda Wright.

Back on the drug case, Peter and Joe's investigation leads them to a drug dealer named Mr. Pewterschmidt, who not only supplies drugs to the town, but is also revealed to be Lois' estranged father. Peter and Lois struggle to come to terms with the fact that her father is a criminal, while Stewie takes advantage of the situation by blackmailing Pewterschmidt for money.

The episode ends with Brian being assigned to assist Peter and Joe in the drug investigation, setting up for the second part of the episode titled "The Thin White Line (Part 2)".
