Peter Griffin, the head of the Griffin family, is excited to return to his high school as a guest speaker. However, his excitement leads to difficulty with crafting a suitable speech. Meanwhile, Chris, the Griffin's teenage son, decides to enroll in a vocational school for easier classes.
At the vocational school, Chris becomes entangled in a new hobby- toy collecting, in which he forms a niche community that provides him support and friendship. However, unforeseen complications arise as Chris's new friends encourage him to forgo his academics altogether and join them in their hobbies.
Simultaneously, Peter struggles with writing his speech, causing him to become restless and begin experimenting with drugs. After struggling with addiction throughout most of the season, Peter's drug use feels like a regression, which adds to the tension of the already rocky speech. Furthermore, Lois, the voice of reason of the Griffin family, grows concerned towards Peter and offers help, only to receive a backlash.
The episode deals with themes of addiction, peer pressure and academic pressure in an entertaining and humorous way. It shows how one's interests can ultimately shape their choices, and how it's just as important to have a balanced social life, as well as a balanced academic one.
Overall, "High School English" is an engaging and hilarious episode that follows both Chris and Peter as they learn about the decisions they have made. The episode showcases the strengths of Family Guy, utilizing their trademark humor mixed with heartfelt drama, making it an enjoyable viewing experience for all.
