Our Idiot Brian begins with the Griffins taking a trip to Martha's Vineyard which Brian initially planned with his girlfriend (Jillian) but eventually backed out last minute. Tired of Brian's naive and gullible personality, the Griffins decide to teach him a lesson on self-reliance. They leave him stranded on the island with no means of communication and hopes that he learns how to fend for himself.

Brian is unable to handle the situation on his own and is saved by an older woman named Martha. Martha lives alone with her dogs and enjoys a simple life, unlike Brian who always seems to complicate things. They form a bond and Brian realizes that he has fallen in love with her, despite their age difference. Martha initially enjoys Brian’s youthfulness and energy but soon realizes that they are too different and parts ways with him.

In the meantime, the Griffins struggle with Brian's absence and feel guilty for leaving him on the island. They feel his absence when dealing with various situations, which are usually resolved with Brian's help. They eventually return to the island to bring Brian back home, but he is hesitant to go back with them. In an emotional moment, Brian reveals his feelings for Martha to the Griffins, but they convince him to move on and head back home.

Back in Quahog, Brian realizes that he has to make some major changes in his life. He starts by writing a book about his experience and learns to embrace his comforting life. On a chance meeting, Brian bumps into Martha who tells him how much she enjoyed his book and how proud she is of him. Surprised by her reaction, Brian realizes that he has moved on and is finally content with his life.

This episode explores the theme of self-discovery and growing up. Brian is known for his inability to accept responsibility and this episode shows him taking charge of his life. He learns to be self-sufficient and finds love in an unexpected source. The Griffins’ effort to teach Brian a lesson also teaches them the importance of having Brian around.

As with most episodes of Family Guy, Our Idiot Brian includes a lot of humor and pop culture references. The Griffins, as usual, get themselves into silly situations, and their conversations are filled with hilarious banter. The episode also features a couple of musical numbers showcasing the characters’ singing talents.

Overall, Our Idiot Brian is a fun-filled episode that explores deeper themes of love, self-discovery and life lessons. It also serves as a reminder to viewers about the importance of taking responsibility for our actions and learning to grow up.
