When wealthy engineer Bill Davis unexpectedly becomes the legal guardian of his three orphaned nieces and nephew, he has a lot to learn about parenting. On season 1, episode 3 of Family Affair, titled "The Gift Horse," Bill and the kids learn about giving back to their community and helping those in need.
The episode begins with the Davis family discussing how to spend their Saturday. Uncle Bill suggests that they all go to the movies, but the kids are not interested and express their desire to do something more meaningful. That's when Mr. French, the family's butler, suggests they visit a nearby hospital and bring some cheer to the children who are stuck there.
The Davis family heads to the hospital with gifts for the children, including a bicycle for a young boy named Timmy. While they are there, they meet a young girl named Sharon who is in the hospital because of a serious illness. Sharon expresses her desire to see a horse, but the hospital doesn't have one. Uncle Bill promises her that he will try to find a way to bring a horse to the hospital for her to see.
The rest of the episode shows the Davis family trying to figure out how to bring a horse to the hospital. They eventually find a stable that is willing to loan them a horse for a few hours, but the horse doesn't want to get in the back of the family's station wagon. Uncle Bill tries everything he can think of to coax the horse into the back of the car, but nothing works.
While all of this is going on, the kids are busy raising money to buy Sharon a special present - a toy horse that she can keep with her in the hospital. They do odd jobs around the neighborhood to earn money, and even Mr. French gets in on the action by donating his own money to the cause.
Eventually, the Davis family comes up with a new plan to bring the horse to the hospital. They lead the horse down the street and through the hospital's front doors, much to the surprise of the hospital staff and patients. The moment when Sharon sees the horse for the first time is heartwarming, and it's clear that the Davis family has made a big difference in her life.
Overall, "The Gift Horse" is a touching episode that teaches the value of giving back and helping others. The Davis family learns that there is more to life than just enjoying material possessions and having fun - it's important to use your resources and talents to make a positive impact on the world around you.
